Vergil is an amnesiac who appeared seemingly out of the blue on the continent of Eorzea. He has no recollection of his past and cannot remember his origins or any other detail of his early life. All he knows about himself is through sensations familiar to him, or through muscle memory; as his body knows what his mind does not. His experiences were coalesed into a 'soul crystal' but despite his best efforts to understand it, in his hands it was not much more than a rock- meaning that his answers would forever be at his fingertips but always out of his reach. Once, he was torn by the idea that there is an aspect of himself he will never come to know, but nowadays he takes more satisfaction in just learning about the world surrounding him than unravelling his own secrets. While previously he travelled all over in hopes of finding hints of his past, he now chases after the joy of experiencing the world for the first time. He occasionally has vivid dreams that he cannot make sense of, followed by bouts of insomnia.
Despite all his setbacks, Vergil works diligently to learn about the world and travels far and wide to broaden his studies. Has a great talent for detecting the weather and uses this to always plan accordingly. He is a natural scholarly type, who speaks in an old-fashioned sort of way. He feels restless if he is not doing something and struggles to relax. There are times when he becomes so consumed with his fascinations that he works tirelessly day and night, often becoming neglectful of his own needs; and subsequently, there are periods when he falls into deep slumbers and does not rise from his bed for many days.
Approaches the world with an open mind- yet is fiercely stubborn about himself. Always sees a task through to completion. He is unphased by a challenge as he staunchly believes that pushing himself to the limit is the key to restoring his lost potential; even if working himself to the bone is ultimately counterintuitive. If it is for something he truly believes in, he will fight to the very end. Keeps a series of journals where he records his tales of adventure for his own reference. The walls of his home are lined with meticulously sorted tomes and encyclopedias; but tends to make a mess of his shelves and of his living space when consumed with a project.
Was once very self-absorbed and haughty, only concerned with doing everything in his power to cure his affliction; but this bore him no luck and he came to realise it was not a burden he could bear alone. Took on an apprentice with the sole intention of using her to decipher his soul crystal, being unable to do it himself- but in time came to terms with his inability to to make sense of his past and his tutelage became genuine.
Vergil's Encyclopedia
- Vergil is not very expressive and may be described as stern or even angry by onlookers; though he is infact a very amicable person whose curiousity leads him to meet many people very different from himself.
- Very studious but almost to the point of obsession, and often to the detriment of his health. His stubbornness usually prevents him from backing down.
- Incapable of relaxing and always can be found doing something in his spare time. Would like to become more easygoing but isn't sure how to go about it.
- He has the mannerisms of someone much older than he would appear to be. Likes to play coy about his age because he doesn't actually know how old he is.
- While typically very polite and well mannered, if his temper gets the better of him he will make scathing remarks without regard for others. Tries very hard to be patient with other people and to suppress his unkind side.
- After many years spent chasing his past he would eventually cobble together an idea of his former self; only to accept his indefinable soul and the new man he becomes each day he wakes up.

- Suprisingly strong despite his library-oriented lifestyle. Typically brings his tome everywhere with him despite it weighing over 30 lbs.
- Values function over appearance and has a poor sense of personal style. If Bebe didn't buy his clothes for him he would just wear the same outfit every day.
- He lives very frugally and prefers to repair the things he has rather than replace them. Because of his cheap lifestyle, he has a suprising amount of money squirreled away.
- When he summons a carbuncle, they always tend to be feral or deranged in nature. There is something about the summoning process he cannot quite perfect.
Vergil's friends, associates; his enemies and his allies.
Bebe Es
His closest friend and his apprentice. Despite being much younger than him, she is as an older sister to him. Bebe interpreted his memories for him by deciphering his soul cystal and inheriting his experiences, using the power of the 'Echo'. She imparted her knowledge of his past to him and effectively cured his amnesia. Her fate is intricately interwoven with Vergil's as a result of accepting his soul crystal and becoming more of 'him' than he himself is. They tend to butt heads, but are the best of friends and share a irreplacable bond. Bebe goes out of her way to watch over Vergil, being a person he can always rely upon. She knows him better than he knows himself and cares immensely for him.
Sanjie
Vergil's own mentor; and the first person to find Vergil after he awoke in a strange land with no recollection of himself. A carpenter and retired adventurer who took him in and taught him all he knows. Sanjie mistook Vergil for a lost friend of his at first, but stuck by his side regardless of his true identity. Sanjie gave him the name Vergil, which was later lengthened to Vergilius. He helped Vergil create his soul crystal and later helped connect him to Bebe. Vergil's earliest memories are of the years he spent with Sanjie in his cabin.
Roman Medeis
An unlikely pair of friends whose relationship hangs in a careful balance of favor accural and repayment. Roman initially approached Vergil and Bebe together with the intent of exploiting Bebe for her wealth; only for Vergil, curious and unaware of his intentions, to become attached to him. Vergil finds Roman interesting and likes hearing stories from his travels, but is often roped into paying off the other man's debts for him. In the face of Vergil's earnest generosity, Roman struggles to treat him coldly; and after his biggest secret was exposed to Vergil, Roman began to appreciate having a friend and confidant more than he ever imagined he would.
